Mental Health Resources for Area Families

A child’s mental health affects success in school. Mental health disorders can result in poor school performance and attendance, according to The Journal of School Nursing. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that in the United States, approximately one out of five adolescents have a mental disorder. With May as Mental Health Awareness Month, read about five organizations that help children, adolescents and their families deal with mental health issues in the the Kansas City metro area.

Family Conservatory

The Family Conservatory offers counseling services on a sliding scale for families and children at its locations in Jackson, Wyandotte and Johnson County.

Jewish Family Services of Greater Kansas City

Jewish Family Services also provides family and youth counseling on a sliding scale budget, and is open to people of all faiths. It also manages the Eating Disorder Resource Center (EDRC).

Mattie Rhodes Center

The Mattie Rhodes Center provides bilingual behavioral and mental health care to youth and families, including counseling. According to the organization, it is the “only fully bilingual/bicultural, nationally accredited, and state-certified behavioral health care provider in the Greater Kansas City region.”

Cornerstones of Care

Gillis, Healthy Families, Marillac, Ozanam and Spofford recently merged to create Cornerstones of Care, an organization working to help families and children achieve safety and health. In partnership with the University of Kansas Hospital, Cornerstones of Care operates the only behavioral health hospital in the area that specifically serves children and adolescents experiencing mental health crises. The organization also provides outpatient counseling and substance abuse treatment for youth, with locations throughout the Kansas City metro.

Synergy Services

With locations in the Northland, Synergy Services provides services to families, children and teens. It also maintain the 24-Hour Youth Crisis Hotline.
