Orangetheory Fitness, the Florida-based exercise chain, is opening its 11th franchise in Metro KC in the Crossroads’s space formerly occupied by The Sundry at 1706 Baltimore.
Rebecca Boresow, co-owner of the fitness center, said she and her partner Darrin McDonald believe downtown is ready for the franchise’s individualized, heart-rate based exercise program.
“We knew that downtown had a demand for an Orangetheory,” she said. “We looked for six months for our space and we knew the moment we walked in. It felt right.”
Ranks of treadmills, water rowing machines and other fitness equipment, all bathed in a faint orange glow, have replaced the funky foodstuff layout of The Sundry, which moved to the Plexpod Westport Commons in late 2017.
Boresow said the partners have invested $750,000 in renovating and equipping the 4,800 square-foot building. The exercise area is on the 3,600 square-foot first floor, the “world headquarters” for Boresow and McDonald’s three franchises is upstairs.

The new Orangetheory Fitness is moving into space formerly occupied by The Sundry.
In addition to the Crossroads location, the pair operate Orangetheory’s at 95th and Nall in Overland Park and in Brookside at 6236 Main.
Orangetheory started in Florida about eight years ago and has grown to 1,050 franchises in 23 countries. Boresow said the name comes from orange, the color of energy, and theory, for the science-based nature of its workout program.
“It’s a one-hour, full-body workout,” she said. “Every class focuses on endurance, strength and power.
“Each class is led by a certified personal trainer who tells you what to do, when to do it, and more importantly, how to do it.”
In addition to the exercise equipment, the Crossroads Orangetheory will feature a full locker room with five showers and a beauty bar that includes hairdryers, lotions and shampoos.
“It’s a workout for everyone, regardless of their fitness level,” Boresow said. “Everyone works at their own heart rate.”
The Orangetheory is scheduled to open Feb. 15. On Feb. 14th, an open house will be held from 4- to 7 p.m. Visitors will be able to check out the studio and there will be food, games and prizes.
