Here’s a great Juneteenth film recommendation: Spike Lee’s new “Da 5 Bloods,” which is the second-most popular title streaming this week on Netflix.
Even better, screenwriter Kevin Willmott just happens to be a friend of Flatland. Willmott, who won the screenwriting Oscar for Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” and also wrote “Da 5 Bloods,” recently took a few minutes to chat about the new film.
“There really hasn’t been a Black Vietnam soldier film,” Willmott says. “It’s amazing to think about… It’s one of the aspects of Black life that’s not been captured much.”
The film follows five soldiers who return to Vietnam in search of the body of a lost comrade, as well as a buried treasure. Willmott takes it from there in the attached video.
