Two hitchers cross paths on a highway in the vast, rolling beauty of the Flint Hills. The intersection of their fundamentally different lives results in a soul-searching thriller.

That, in a nutshell, is the set-up for filmmaker Nicholaus James’ debut feature film, “Found Wandering Lost.”

Principal shooting for the film was completed in 2018. But the film has been on hold ever since with post-production work and delays due to the pandemic.

The wait was worth it.

The film won the “Best Heartland Narrative Feature” award at the recent Kansas City FilmFest International. It also won the audience choice award for “Best Narrative Feature” at the same event.

The movie variously evokes a modern-day Western, road film and film noir. And the Flint Hills offer a consistently stunning visual palette.

James hopes the film prompts you to ponder your own path in life: “That question is, I think, what makes me wake up every morning — provoking an audience to ask a question of themselves.”
