The Block | The “Central Philosophy” of Betty Rae’s Ice Cream

Short 10

It’s a mystical thing, ice cream. Just listen to Betty Rae’s owner David Friesen expound on the “central philosophy of ice cream… It’s just that everything is perfect for a minute.”

Folks flocked when Friesen and his wife opened the first Betty Rae’s at 7140 Wornall Road in Waldo in 2016. In 2018, they expanded to a second location at 412 Delaware St. in the River Market.

Betty Rae’s is named after Friesen’s grandmother, who went to great lengths to spoil him with food he couldn’t get at home as a child.

“Ice cream can kind of like, do a lightning bolt right into your brain to that memory spot,’’ Friesen says. “I just wanted that spirit to continue.”

It’s working. See more in this week’s installment of “The Block.”

“The Block” takes viewers on a journey through Kansas City’s streets to get a sense of the people and cuisine – the fabric of KC’s neighborhoods. But this isn’t just a food show. There’s history, culture and unknown facts about Kansas City. You’ll go inside kitchens, see how food and drinks are made, and peek into the lives of everyday Kansas Citians working in the service industry.
