Kaldi’s Coffee closed its location at 12th and Main in the KC Power & Light District Friday, taping a note on the door to patrons expressing its “pleasure serving downtown Kansas City the past six years.”
The popular coffee shop hangout in the heart of the central business district, which also featured light food offerings, has outgrown its high-profile corner space, according to its landlord, the Cordish Co.
“Kaldi’s has seen great success in the Power & Light District with the growing demand downtown, so much so that they have outgrown the space, and we wish them the best of luck,” Rachel Waller, marketing director for the Power & Light District, said in a statement.
“We are excited for the opportunity to welcome new businesses into the Power & Light District neighborhood, and we’ll soon have a new tenant in this great corner space, at the 12th & Main Street streetcar stop.”
Attempts to reach officials with St. Louis-based Kaldi’s Coffee for comment were unsuccessful.
In their note to customers, Kaldi’s stated it was looking for new space, but did not specifically mention downtown. The firm also has two shops on the Country Club Plaza.
“We are full committed to Kansas City and are seeking new space to be able to provide a full-service Kaldi’s experience including kitchen operations,” according to the note.
The downtown coffee scene has been percolating in recent months including the opening of a second Spokes Café|Cyclery at 10th and Walnut; a second PT’s Coffee at 13th and Baltimore; another Starbucks at 16th and Main, and a fresh entry, Revocup, at Ninth and McGee.
