Art House Extra | Tivoli Under the Stars

Art House Extra

August 13, 2021  |  John G. McGrath  |  1 min read

Going out to the movies has taken on a whole new meaning this summer at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

The venerable cultural institution, which gave the beloved Tivoli theater a new venue two years ago, has taken the show outside in response to the lingering COVID-19 pandemic. Tivoli Under the Stars is now in the midst of a May-to-October run of outdoor, socially distant Friday evening movie screenings projected on the exterior of the Bloch Building.

“What we really want is for people to be able to come together and experience the power of film in an environment that celebrates art in all of its forms,” said Casey Claps, manager of strategic initiatives at the Nelson-Atkins.

The program has been a hit. Almost every screening on the schedule, which culminates with an Oct. 29 presentation of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” is sold out.

Pass the popcorn.
