Kansas City native Robert Altman followed his breakout hit “M.A.S.H.” by heading to the mountains outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, and making this idiosyncratic Western.
There’s much to commend in “McCabe and Mrs. Miller” — particularly the directing, acting and cinematography. But the secret sauce may be the sound design, ranging from the music of Leonard Cohen to how Altman allows separate conversations to wash over one another — sort of like a great dinner party.
