It’s a classic story in the art world: A great artist isn’t fully appreciated until long after they’re gone.

Perhaps it’s Albert Bloch’s turn.

Filmmaker Tim De Paepe devoted years to creating the documentary “AB: The Life and Work of Albert Bloch.”

“ ‘AB’ is about… a painter and a poet from the Midwest,” De Paepe says. “He is probably one of the most famous artists nobody has ever heard of.”

The film recounts the odyssey of a young illustrator from St. Louis, who moves to Germany, becomes one of the founding members of the expressionism art movement, and ultimately settles in Lawrence at the University of Kansas.

The richly detailed, lovingly rendered story taps De Paepe’s twin passions for filmmaking and art history. It is clearly designed to elevate Bloch’s reputation as a leading figure in modern art.

Check out the attached video and decide for yourself. The film is currently on the festival circuit.
