Art House Extra: ‘Doctor Sleep’ Serves as a Great Sequel to ‘The Shining’

“Art House” is here to help social distancing movie fans looking for great streaming options in the age of coronavirus.
This week’s recommendation is director Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep,” a sequel to film legend Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.”
In making the movie, Flanagan sought to reconcile differences between author Stephen King’s original book and Kubrick’s film. And according to McGrath, he succeeds brilliantly.
McGrath loves the way Flanagan takes specific shots from Kubrick’s version and recreates them for this film, and the way he casts actors that look like characters from the 1980 film to play them in his 2019 film.
All in all, McGrath says “Doctor Sleep” is a gem of a film. In fact, the biggest marketing flaw may be the title, which doesn’t make it clear that it’s a sequel to “The Shining.” How about something simple like “Shine”?
