Weekend Possibilities | De-stress at Smash House KC, The Grand Marquis and Christmas Goodies

Breaking stuff, baking cookies and bathing in a live music stream are among the options during December’s penultimate weekend.

Friday, Dec. 18

Have you ever felt the urge to take a sledge hammer to a television screen? Well, you aren’t alone. Set up a time to visit Smash House KC, 1800 Genessee St. in the Hy-Vee Arena, where stressed-out folks can transfer negative energy into pure destruction. The Smash House crew will set you up with goggles, gloves and such, so all you have to do is swing the hammer at old washing machines, glassware and more. Pricing depends on how long you want to destroy.

5 – 7 p.m. Santa Claus and his bride are headed for Independence Square, 108 S. Liberty St., for a Friday night photo op. Swing by the Christmas Holiday Drive-thru to get a picture with the North Pole’s most notable pair, plus a gift bag from the big man himself. Walk-up visits are not permitted.

7 – 9 p.m. Miss the Kansas City live music scene, but don’t want to venture out just yet? Grab a livestream ticket to watch The Grand Marquis Live from the Westport Saloon on Friday night. Tickets to see the band in-person at limited capacity are $20. Be sure to check online for updated livestream info.

Saturday, Dec. 19

11 a.m. – 7 p.m. The On The Hook Fish and Chips traveling food truck stops in Kansas City this weekend. Pop by the Savers parking lot at 2251 N.W. Barry Road to try the beer battered fries and hand-dipped wild Alaskan cod. This might be your last chance to try the road tripping restaurant on wheels for a while.

5 – 10:15 p.m. Saturday is your last chance to set off on a Rozarks Luminary Hike through Fisher Park, 3818 Springfield St. in Kansas City, Kansas. The Rosedale Development Association is inviting adventure seekers to bundle up for a hike across the illuminated Rozarks Trails. Participants are encouraged to register with members of their households. Hikers must wear a mask or face covering. Donations are encouraged.

6 p.m. Cozy up in the car for a Drive-In Movie showing of “The Grinch” (2018) at The Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive. Be sure to register early, as space in the Civic Centre parking lot is limited and keep an eye out for a special visitor going car to car.

Sunday, Dec. 20

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Who doesn’t like donuts? Wake up early and head to the Lenexa Public Market, 8750 Penrose Lane, for a Donutology Pop-Up. There will be gingerbread donuts made to order, plus cinnamon rolls, fritters, holiday-theme minis and more. Go wild, it’s the holidays.

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. There’s another sweet opportunity for Sunday morning, thanks to The Culinary Center of Kansas City, 7920 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park. Register for The Merry Elves’ Family Cookie Baking & Decorating Workshop to reserve your spot for cookie making, handling, baking and decorating for the whole family. There will be holiday tunes and hot cocoa to enjoy while the cookies are baking. Each child 8 or under must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.
