People hungering for breakfast downtown will have a new option next year when HomeGrown opens at 101 E. 13th St. in the Power & Light District.

The restaurant is one of two concepts being opened in 2024 by the Thrive Restaurant Group in the P&L District. The other is Modern Market Eatery, a fast-food place that specializes in healthy foods with no artificial flavors or additives.

Both restaurants are taking space that has been dormant for three years in the District. HomeGrown is occupying the former Flying Saucer Draught Emporium location, and Modern Market Eatery the former Mixx restaurant space at 1347 Main.

“We believe the opportunity for opening in downtown Kansas City couldn’t be better,” Jon Rolph, president of Thrive, said in a statement.

“The growth, diversity and energy of the District aligns perfectly with our passion for community and commitment to help Kansas City eat well and cultivate kindness.”

The new HomeGrown location will be the third in the metro, the others are in Brookside, Liberty and Leawood. It will occupy 5,000 square-feet and offer breakfast, brunch and lunch.  It also offers cocktails including Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s.

The Modern Market Eatery concept started in Boulder, CO and features foods free from artificial flavors, trans fats, hormones, antibiotics and unnecessary additives, according to a press release. It opened its first metro location in Prairie Village earlier this year.

The chain now operates 30 locations and is growing rapidly. It’s lunch and dinner menu features grain bowls, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, wine and beer. It will occupy 3,000 square-feet.

“These new tenants mark the beginning of big news to come,” John Moncke, president of the Power & Light District said in a statement. “We have several exciting reveals planned for the rest of 2023 that will strengthen the District’s continued evolution.”

The Power & Light District recently opened its third, luxury apartment tower, Three Light, and is renovating the historic Midland office building into 135 loft apartments. The Midland is expected to open in May 2024.
