Hutch furniture, the creation of two Omaha guys who’s idea of a fun outing was hitting estate sales, is opening a new store at 504 E. 18th St. in the East Crossroads.

“Brad and I started collecting vintage furniture five years ago as a hobby and a 1960s Stanley hutch was our first piece, that’s where the name came from,” said Nick Huff, who co-founded the business with partner Brandon Beed.

“It sparked our interest and it’s really fun. Instead of going out to eat and drink as a couple, we went to estate sales.”

The pair collected more than 100 pieces of furniture and originally planned to sell only online, but were persuaded to move into a temporary shop in the historic Old Market area of downtown Omaha.

At first, it was just a weekend business, but then it took off.

“After one month, lots of people came and we sold our first collection. A developer asked if we’d like to open a permanent store,” Huff said.

So hutch relocated to larger space in midtown Omaha and eventually grew into a 5,000 square-foot shop three years ago. It also began selling new furniture as well.

Now, the Omaha store is devoted solely to new home furnishings which Huff described as “hip, affordable, quality furniture. It’s also branched out into office furniture and interior design work.

The decision to open a second store in Kansas City seemed a logical progression.

“We felt it was a natural fit,” Huff said. “We have some new business partners in KC and our vendors were interested in that market. We also have friends in Kansas City and it’s only three hours away.”

Hutch hopes to open its 2,000 square-foot Crossroads store by June. It will only sell home furnishings at first specializing in living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. In addition, the store will feature original art and accessories from local designers.

The hours likely will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.
