Regulatory hurdles have scuttled plans for Carondelet Health to sell its two area hospitals to HCA Midwest Health System.

Carondelet Health said in a news release that the two sides discontinued talks after it became clear that the Federal Trade Commission would not issue a “timely, supportive decision.”

Carondelet Health, which is part of St. Louis-based Ascension Health, operates St. Joseph Medical Center in south Kansas City and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, Mo. The facilities have 450 beds and 900 staff physicians combined.

In May, Carondelet Health announced plans to sell St. Joseph and St. Mary’s to HCA. The deal also included several other Carondelet Health subsidiaries.

The two sides did not disclose terms of the deal.

HCA Midwest Health System operates 10 area hospitals along with outpatient centers, clinics, physician practices and surgery centers.
