By 2030, it’s predicted that adults over the age of 60 will outnumber those under 18 for the first time in U.S. history.

How are older residents and their caregivers equipped to meet the challenges inherent in aging in our area?

Flatland looks at two organizations providing services intended to support people staying in their homes as long as possible: Johnson County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and the PACE KC program at Swope Health.

Johnson County Area Agency on Aging’s mission is “to advocate for and assist older adults in maintaining their independence and dignity through community-based services.” PACE stands for “Program All Inclusive Care for the Elderly” .

From help with home modifications to transportation to counseling services and much more, these agencies provide a lifeline of support to families around the Kansas City metro.

The Invisible Army: Caregivers in KC

Actor Bradley Cooper is known for his movies, “The Hangover,” “American Sniper” and “A Star is Born.”

He is less well known for his role as a full-time caregiver for his father. Cooper is partnering with PBS on a new film that tracks the “invisible, unpaid army” of Americans who look after aging or dependent loved ones.

In conjunction with the two-hour documentary, which premieres on June 24, Kansas City PBS lifts up the hood on the local caregiving crisis that’s squeezing thousands of families.
