Downtown’s first medical marijuana dispensary, From the Earth, is scheduled to open at the beginning of June at 1222 McGee, near the T-Mobile Center and Power & Light District.

Tyler Diltz, a From the Earth employee, said the new downtown dispensary is a relocation from a previous site on Independence Avenue in northeast Kansas City and is expected to  provide a much higher profile.

“Once marijuana goes recreational here, this store will do really well,” Diltz said.

The shop will be the fifth opened by From the Earth in the metropolitan area since Missouri began issuing medical marijuana licenses.

In addition to downtown, the firm has opened a shop at 2918 Southwest Blvd. and 6200 Troost in the city; a shop on 40 Highway in Independence and will soon be opening one in Raytown.

From the Earth will feature a 2,000 square-foot retail dispensary for a variety of medical marijuana products.

“From The Earth MO is a fully licensed medical cannabis dispensary built with our community in mind,” according to the firm’s website.

“Our business is made up of Missouri locals of all ages and walks of life. We are here to help people understand the benefits of medicinal marijuana, while also working towards undoing years of stigma and disinformation about these incredible plants.”

Diltz said From the Earth has its own marijuana growing facility ironically called Illicit Gardens.

“We’re big on social justice and we’re taking the term ‘illicit’ and flipping it on its head,” he said. “Why was this medicine ever considered illicit?”

The company website outlines its social justice policy:

From the Earth opened a dispensary at 2918 Southwest Blvd. earlier this year.

“Whether it’s raising awareness about incarcerated Missourians who have been penalized disproportionately in the war on drugs, or by providing financial resources to local economic development organizations, we are always working to be a positive force of change in our community.”

As part of its business plan, From the Earth asks customers to round up their charges and donate the proceeds to the Hispanic Economic Development Committee, Diltz said.

The new shop on McGee will have a 2,000 square-foot retail space selling a variety of marijuana products including buds, edibles, concentrates, vapes and lotions.

A medical marijuana card is required to make purchases.

Hours are expected to be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.

With the arrival of medical marijuana in Missouri and the anticipation the state will eventually legalize it for recreational use, other dispensaries are opening in the city including 5,500 square-foot shop being built by Fresh Karma at 240 E. Linwood.
