Work on an $11 million addition to the Corrigan Station development is scheduled to begin next month now that a major tenant has been lined up.

Academy Bank will be the anchor tenant for the three-story building going up on a former parking lot west of the original Corrigan Station building at 1828 Walnut St. The addition will occupy the northeast corner of 19th and Main and is next to a streetcar stop.

The developers, Copaken Brooks and 3D Development, said the 22,910 square-foot addition is the first new office construction in the Crossroads Arts District.

“This new building will be a Class A, multi-tenant office building and bring more employees and innovative companies to the Crossroads area,” Jon Copaken, a principal, said in an announcement.

Vince Bryant, owner of 3D Development, said the new project is building on the success of Corrigan Station. That $41 million project, which renovated a historic 10-story building, opened in December 2016 and is fully occupied.

“After successfully completing the renovation of Corrigan Station and bringing in a full list of tenants, we are very motivated to continue the momentum towards this second phase of the project,” Bryant said in a statement.

The key to the project moving forward was the decision by Academy Bank to be the anchor tenant. The bank plans to open a 5,000 square-feet full-service operation on the first floor. It’s expected to open in early 2019.

“Understanding the importance of the Crossroads District to the Kansas City community, we are excited to bring our banking model to this vibrant downtown area,” Paul Holewinski, president and CEO, said in a statement.

In addition to an array of banking services, the facility will include a central lounge area with a coffee bar, charging stations and a community room available for meetings by business, civic and philanthropic groups, according to a release.

The addition is being designed by Helix Architecture + Design. It’s described as a unique, modern design that will use a mix of zinc, concrete and glass.

Tenants will be able to use amenities at Corrigan Station including a rooftop clubhouse and patio, and a penthouse conference room with views of the downtown skyline. A small courtyard also will be located between the addition and the main Corrigan Station building.

The project is expected to be completed this fall, with operations beginning around the holidays.
