Other options as calendars turn to October include an NHL preseason game, haunted houses and George Lopez at the Uptown Theater.
Friday, Sept. 29
6 – 10 p.m. Handcrafted steel and silk structures are going up around the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, 6800 Zoo Drive, this weekend for GloWild Around the World. 7:30 p.m. Kansas City’s world-renowned haunted houses are open for scaring. Braving the West Bottoms haunts before October is probably the best way to beat long lines. The Beast, 1401 W. 13th St., brings visitors into the teeth of an open format haunted house, where it’s easy to get lost among lurking phantoms and ghouls. Tickets to The Beast are $35, plus tax and fees. Combo tickets to add the Edge of Hell and Macabre Cinema to the experience are available as well.
8 p.m. Tickets are still available for George Lopez Friday night at Uptown Theater, 3700 Broadway Blvd. The legendary actor and stand-up comedian’s “Alllriiiighhttt!” tour is reserved for those 18 and older with a valid ID. You can get in the door for $41.50, plus tax and fees. Doors open at 7 p.m.

6 p.m. The National Hockey League hasn’t had a team in Kansas City since the Scouts left town in 1976. While an NHL franchise isn’t coming to town anytime soon, the annual preseason game at Cable Dahmer Arena, 19100 E. Valley View Pkwy., is Saturday night and features a matchup the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars. Tickets to watch professional hockey on Kansas City ice are available starting at $65 plus tax and fees.

4 – 5:15 p.m. It’s hardly Halloween, but there’s nothing wrong with getting in the spooky spirit. The Wornall Majors House Museums is starting the season with Kid’s Ghost Tours at Alexander Majors House and Barn, 8201 State Line Road. The tours by kids, for kids are designed to be spooky rather than really scary and will include information on the house’s history with a few creepy stories. There will be Halloween activities in front of the museum throughout the afternoon. Tours leave every 15 minutes.Tickets are $10.
6:30 p.m. Perhaps the opposite of a kid’s ghost tour, Screenland Armour, 408 Armour Road, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of “The Exorcist” (1973) with a Sunday night screening of the film to kick off “Shocktober” at the North Kansas City theater. Considered one of the scariest horror films ever made, “The Exorcist,” directed by William Friedkin, is the story of a possessed little girl and her mother’s effort to expel the demon through an exorcism by two Catholic priests. The movie is rated ‘R.’ Tickets are $13.
8 p.m. Come Sunday, take a break from any Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce talk. Beyoncé is coming to town.
